The Carroll County Times was founded on October 6, 1911 as The Times. Owner and publisher George Mather, whose father owned the once-prominent Mather’s Department Store in Westminster, sold The Times in 1947. The Times expanded and became the Carroll County Times in 1956, reflecting a long-standing emphasis on community news that still resonates today.
While the mission of local news and information held steady, the Carroll County Times changed hands several times over the next 20 years. It was a twice weekly paper when purchased by Landmark Community Newspapers, in 1974. The paper began publishing five days a week in 1980. After nearly 70 years of growth, the paper finally outgrew its small office at 14 Carroll Street in Westminster and moved to 201 Railroad Avenue in Westminster. Not long after, in 1987, the Times began publishing seven days a week and added home delivery. In May, 2014,The Times was purchased by the Baltimore Sun Media Group and moved to 115 Airport Drive, Suite 170 in September, 2014.
For more than 90 years the Carroll County Times has chronicled the evolution of Carroll County from its quiet rural setting to the diverse and growing community it is today. The Times has developed along with the community it serves. While the primary focus remains community and local news, coverage has been expanded to include more state, regional, national and international news to meet readers’ information needs.
The Times, as part of Baltimore Sun Media Group, is one of Carroll County’s top 20 employers and a proud supporter of the community through the Newspapers in Education Program, Holiday Hope, and involvement in many community events and organizations. In addition to the Carroll County Times, Baltimore Sun Media Group produces a number of niche publications including The Community Times, the Advocate of Westminster & Finksburg, the Advocate of Eldersburg & Sykesville, the Advocate of Hampstead & Manchester, and Purchasing Power.
The Times also publishes Web sites for the Carroll County Times, Community Times, Eldersburg Advocate, Westminster Advocate and Hampstead Advocate. In addition it produces a high school sports site Carroll Varsity.
